OUR HISTORY
My Brother's Table came into existence in response to the1989 hurricane, Hugo. It started out as a volunteer association and was incorporated in 1993 and has been helping and feeding hungry people ever since. For most of that time, Pastor Rod Koopmans (former and late pastor of the St.Croix Reformed Church) served as executive director. Pastor Bob Wakefield who has served with My Brothers’ Table since its beginning, became executive director after the 2017 death of his colleague, Pastor Rod.
Additionally, Ms Rose Carty and Ms Hyacinth George have faithfully cooked and served the community of Frederiksted and the island of St Croix for over 32 years. MBT serves 15,000 meals annually to the hungry in our community. The motto used by the operation - now located in the Viola Otis Stienmann Community Center in Frederiksted - is "Serving over 10,000 meals annually, to one hungry person at a time."
“I love to cook,” Carty says. “I feel good helping people.”
Community support comes in many ways. People give boxes of mangoes, plantains, carambola (star fruit) or whatever there may be a seasonal surplus of. Ms Rose can come up with numerous ways to use a big box of provisions so nothing goes to waste.
Over the years, donations of time and monetary donations have been essential. Church and community groups serve faithfully and give of their time. “We have relied on the generous support of the community since opening. We appreciate all the support to fulfill the need in the community.”
